What do providers charge for withdrawing cash via an ATM?
Each provider will have different fees, so it’s good to be clued up before signing up for the card, especially if carrying cash is important to you.
Here’s an example of four travel cards:
- Currensea travel debit card - you can withdraw £500 worth of currency a month from an ATM before paying a charge of 1%
- Revolut - Free cash withdrawals up to 5 ATM withdrawals or £200 in value (whichever comes first) per rolling month, then a fee of 2% is applied
- FairFX - a £1 international ATM fee applied per withdrawal with no fee-free amount
- Post Office - The Post Office charges $2.50 or €2 for every ATM withdrawal from their Travel Money card. This can quickly rack up if you visited the ATM every day during a two week holiday this would total to $30 or €28 just to withdraw cash
To make sure that you get the most for your money, choose a travel money card that gives you a cash withdrawal allowance and only withdraw up to the fee-free amount. If you then pay for the rest of your holiday expenses with your travel card, you’ll limit fees.
