About Currensea

How it started

James and Craig were fed up with paying unnecessary bank fees every time they travelled.
The alternatives weren’t much better: prepaid cards, extra accounts, constant top-ups and too much friction.
There had to be a simpler way to spend abroad. So they built it.

Currensea

Currensea launched in 2020 as the UK’s first direct debit travel card. It connects securely to your current account and lets you spend abroad in local currency without the sneaky high-street banks’ FX fees.
There’s no new bank account to open, and no prepaid balance to manage. Just travel money, made easy.

2020
A new way to travel
Currensea launches as the UK’s first direct debit travel card, following approval from the FCA.
2022
Growing the platform
Partnerships with charities and companies enable bespoke debit card programmes across the UK.
2024
Launching loyalty
Travel loyalty partnership began with Hilton Honors, expanding to Marriott Bonvoy (2025) and United MileagePlus (2026).
2026
Expanding across Europe
After receiving authorisation from De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB), Currensea launches in the Netherlands, marking the first step in building a broader European offering.
