THE TRAVEL CARD

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Should we really be charged to spend abroad or have to jump through hoops to avoid fees? Currensea was created to solve that problem simply and transparently.

Who we are

In 2017 two ex-investment bankers were fed up with excessive charges from their banks after their family summer holidays. They'd tried pre-pay cards and secondary bank accounts, but the faff of endless topping up, remembering separate balances, and the inevitable card declines meant these options were gathering dust in a draw.

They both knew there had to be a better way, so they developed a multi-currency debit card that connects straight to an existing bank account but eliminates the banks' charges abroad.

And so the concept of Currensea was born…

Kelly Devine, Division President, UK & Ireland

Currensea and Santander

"The Currensea proposition is potentially a real game changer in retail banking, allowing retail banking clients to maintain their existing bank account and relationship whilst at the same time benefiting from the science of Fintech.  A real win:win for incumbent banks and their clients with an enormous potential market.  The simplicity of the solution for the user is perhaps its strongest feature whilst at the same time bringing genuine transparency of pricing".

Jon Bowring, Head of Professional & Financial Services Santander Corporate & Commercial Banking

“The team at Currensea have delivered a revolutionary programme that delivers a cost-efficient and sustainable structure through direct integration with the Open Banking framework. This allows them to provide their users with an account that helps them manage and save their money, as well as giving the user the chance to have environmental impact by ringfencing the savings they make to offset their carbon footprint. Genius!"

We are carbon neutral

We’ve been awarded our 2023/2024 certificate by Carbon Neutral Britain, officially confirming we're doing our part in offsetting more than we produce through our partnership with Eden Reforestation Projects. Eden work with charities and organisations globally, to offset our carbon footprint by planting trees, supporting local communities in reducing their reliance on fossil fuels, and creating more renewable energy sources.

Increasing our cards lifespan

Increasing our cards lifespan

By extending the lifespan of our travel debit cards from 3 to 5 years we are reducing our plastic waste and our carbon requirements in producing and delivering our cards, resulting in an overall reduction of our footprint.

Removing more than we produce

Removing more than we produce

We know our travel debit card contains plastic, and are working on different solutions to reduce this. In the meantime, we're focussed on reducing the impact of our cards. We have committed to removing 2.5 times the plastic we produce every year. We do this by supporting Plastic Bank who recover and recycle ocean bound plastic.
